Community Organizations Gold Standards Deep Dive & Self Assessment Tool
Community-facing organizations are the heartbeat of paddlesports. Long before someone buys their first premium paddle, joins a race, or plans a multi-day expedition, chances are they were invited to a club paddle, attended a community event, volunteered at a river cleanup, or learned from someone who simply loved sharing time on the water. That simple truth was the focus of the Paddlesports Trade Coalition's recent webinar introducing the Community Organization Gold Standards and Self-Assessment Tool.
Why It Matters
The webinar challenged attendees to think differently about community organizations. Rather than viewing nonprofit organizations as separate from the industry, presenters described them as an essential part of the paddlesports ecosystem. Clubs, conservation organizations, adaptive programs, advocacy groups, instructional programs, and volunteer-led initiatives create welcoming experiences that introduce new people to paddling and help casual paddlers stay engaged for years at a time.
Community Organizations Create Participation and Feed Retention
Presenters emphasized that participation doesn't happen by accident. It is built through positive experiences, trusted relationships, and opportunities to belong. Those experiences most often happen at the community level, where volunteers organize trips, mentor beginners, advocate for access, and create safe, welcoming environments. As participation grows, retailers, brands, outfitters, instructors, and sales representatives all benefit from a larger and more engaged paddling community.
Four Gold Standards
- Grow participation through welcoming and inclusive experiences.
- Advocate for waterway access, stewardship, and conservation.
- Educate and empower paddlers through safety, mentorship, and leadership.
- Connect community organizations with retailers, brands, outfitters, and the broader paddlesports ecosystem.
A Tool for Continuous Improvement
The webinar also introduced the Community Organization Self-Assessment Tool. Rather than grading organizations, it encourages leadership teams to reflect honestly, identify strengths, and choose two or three priorities for the coming year. The goal is continuous improvement that strengthens both local organizations and the paddlesports industry as a whole.
