Bridging the Conversation: How Sales Reps Connect Brands, Retailers, and the Paddling Community

The paddlesports industry is built on relationships and relies on communication. Brands design and build products, retailers bring those products to market and paddlers rely on both to get the right gear and knowledge for their time on the water. Sitting between all of that are sales reps who see how decisions made at one level affect everyone else.

Bridging the conversation is one of the most important roles a rep can play. It is not just about passing information back and forth. It is about listening, understanding different perspectives and helping connect the dots between brands, retailers and the paddling community. When communication breaks down it shows up as missed expectations, poor sell through and frustrated customers. When communication is strong everyone benefits.

From my experience as a sales rep bridging the conversation is one of the most valuable ways I support both brands and retailers. By gathering feedback, aligning expectations, following up and sharing broader perspective reps help build trust and strengthen the paddlesports ecosystem as a whole.

Actions for Success

1. Gather Real, Actionable Feedback

Sales reps spend a lot of time where real conversations happen. On shop floors, at demo days, during events, and out on the water with paddlers. These moments provide valuable real-world insight into how products are being received and used, insight that is incredibly valuable to brands.

We hear directly from retailers about which products are selling well and which ones are struggling, along with the feedback they are hearing from customers. We learn about quality and warranty issues as they arise, allowing us to identify patterns that may point to a larger concern. Just as important, we also hear positive feedback about what is working and what products are doing right.

Because reps gather this information from multiple shops, regions, and end users across different environments and paddling disciplines, we can see a much broader picture of how a product is performing. It is our responsibility to consolidate that information, identify trends, and deliver feedback to brands in a clear, concise, and actionable way. Serving as a filter for our territory helps ensure brands receive focused feedback that supports informed decisions and meaningful product improvements.

2. Aligning Expectations Between Brands and Retailers

Being a sales rep means constantly balancing the needs of both the brands we represent and the retailers we support. We sit in the middle of those relationships and act as the main point of connection between two groups that ultimately want the same thing: to run healthy businesses while providing quality products that allow paddlers to enjoy their time on the water safely.

A key part of that role is keeping the lines of communication open and clear. Reps help ensure that the goals of both brands and retailers are communicated early and aligned whenever possible. We share the challenges each side is facing, whether that is market conditions, staffing, inventory, or shifting consumer demand, and help frame those challenges as shared problems to solve together. Just as important, we help identify and communicate opportunities that can benefit both parties.

Strong partnerships are built on honest and consistent communication. When reps facilitate open conversations and make sure everyone understands the bigger picture, it creates trust and prevents small issues from becoming larger ones. By helping brands and retailers stay aligned and informed, reps play a critical role in supporting long term growth and success for both.

3. Follow-Through and Follow-Up

Sharing feedback is only part of the job. Following up is just as important.

Retailers want to know that their input was heard and taken seriously. Brands want clarity on what is happening in the field after changes are made. Sales reps help close that loop by staying engaged after feedback is shared and communicating outcomes updates or next steps.

Even when the answer is not immediate or simple, following up reinforces that communication matters. It keeps everyone invested in the process and encourages continued honesty and collaboration.

A Real World Example

Bridging the conversation is one of the most important parts of being a sales rep. It is something we do every day, often behind the scenes, and it benefits everyone involved. A recent example of this came with the launch of a new product by one of my brands.

The product was well received by a retailer and sold quickly to a customer. After the first use, the customer realized that one of the included components had the wrong fitting. That feedback was shared with the retailer, passed along to me as the rep, and then communicated directly to the brand. Because the information moved quickly and clearly, the brand was able to respond right away by getting the customer the correct part and sending replacement components for all remaining units, both at the retail level and in their warehouse.

That quick flow of communication allowed the issue to be identified and resolved before it became a larger problem. It is a strong example of how keeping conversations open and responsive helps protect the customer experience, support retailers, and strengthen trust in the brand.

Key Takeaways

Bridging the conversation is about more than communication. It is about trust, clarity, and follow-through. Sales reps play a critical role by gathering real-world feedback, aligning expectations between brands and retailers, and staying engaged after information is shared.

When reps listen carefully, communicate honestly, and follow through consistently, small issues are addressed before they become larger problems. Retailers feel supported, brands stay informed, and paddlers benefit from better products and experiences on the water.
